Rome Part I

Rome was our first stop on our trip to India. It was awesome and I loved every minute of it.
The first day we were there we went to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, but before we could even walk a block, we had to get some gelato!

Sadly, my first experience with gelato wasn't as awesome as I thought it would be. It turns out that the gelato was old, and I picked a flavor that I didn't like. But the 50 other scoops of gelato that we had were awesome.

At the Colosseum.
This was a view from the Colosseum overlooking the Roman Forum.

That is the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine in the background.

We had a tour book and we were going to go to a restaurant that the book recommended, so we walked and walked and took a couple wrong turns and walked some more. When we finally got the restaurant, they were closed until dinner time. So then we went around the corner and found a little pizza shop and had some great pizza. Why is it that pizza tastes so much better in Italy?

This was our last serving of gelato for the 1st day and it was really really good. As you can see, I was pretty excited about it.

After lunch we went to a couple more museums and then decided that since it was getting late we better try and find our hotel. Well it turned out that our hotel wasn't really in Rome... After figuring out how to use the pay phones there, we called the hotel and asked them what tram we needed to take to get there. So we got a train pass, and got on the tram... heading in the wrong direction. Luckily it didn't take us long to realize our mistake, so we got off and headed in the right direction. Since this hotel is so out of town, there isn't a bus that goes up there, so the hotel has a van that makes a few trips a day to and from the hotel to the train station. The last pick-up from the train station is at 9pm and when we got off the train it was 9:10 and there was no sign of the van. We were really lucky that night because there were other people there waiting for the van. I'm pretty sure that the van did an extra trip that night because all the other times it left right on the hour. Anyways, in the end we made it to our hotel.
And for any of you planning on traveling to Europe, remember to bring toilet paper. Not everyone believes in it there and apparently at the place we were staying it cost extra to have it put in your room.

  1. Wow! It sounds like an adventure! I have always wanted to go to Italy - that's where my family is from. I can't wait to hear more about it! David's brother comes home on Tuesday from serving a mission in Sicily, Italy (Sicily is specifically where my relatives are from).
